Questions to Ask Yourself Before Beginning the College Application Process
It can be overwhelming to begin the college application process. You might expect to know, all at once, what you want to study, where you want to live, what you want to do for work, and what you’re most passionate about. When your classmates start talking about their goals and dreams for college, you might feel nervous or anxious, and want to avoid the conversations altogether. With so much information available at your fingertips, it is no surprise that it’s hard to know where to begin.
At Mosaico, we think that reflecting, step-by-step, can be an enormous help. After working with many students on their college application process, we have come to appreciate the value of honest introspection. Break it down into steps: individual questions that you can explore one at a time, to help you get a better sense of your priorities, your interests, and your hopes for the future.
What has been your favorite class in high school? What do you like about it?
What do you do for fun after school or on weekends?
When was the last time you put way more effort into something than was expected? What was it and why did you work so hard on it?
When was the last time you were so into something that you completely lost track of time? What were you doing?
What do people thank you for?
What did you like to spend your time doing as a child? Do you still enjoy doing this?
What do you dislike doing or do only because you have to?
What topics do you find yourself continuously arguing or defending with others?
What would you do if you knew you would not be judged or fail?
What is something you want to make sure to do in your lifetime?
Working with a Mosaico mentor will help you to see how each of these questions reveals important aspects of your profile as a college applicant, and how you can use your answers to build your application plan. When you look over these questions, remember that there’s no right or wrong answer — you just have to be as honest as you can!
