What we do

Mosaico mentors help students define academic goals, prepare for standardized tests, develop a personalized list of colleges and universities, and complete the college application process.

How we do it

Our program is holistic, personalized, and professional. Through mentorship, we build relationships based on trust and accountability with our students. We help them develop the tools they need to succeed in their application process. 

Who we are

We are a team of passionate educators with extensive experience guiding students through their college application process. Our students have access to the cumulative knowledge of our academically and professionally diverse team. Every week, our mentors meet to research and develop tools to tackle the challenges of each student’s personalized program.

Integrity

We value integrity in our work and teach students to be the agents of their own success. We set high ethical standards for ourselves and our students and abide by the Statement of Principles of Good Practice published by the National Association for College Admissions Counseling.

Curiosity

We practice open-minded curiosity throughout the college application process and encourage our students to do the same. By asking them to reflect on who they are and how they see themselves in the future, we encourage each student to be open to distinct, exciting possibilities.

Respect

For students to grow throughout the college application process, having respect for themselves and their own work is essential. Mentors and students also show respect for each other, by listening attentively, communicating honestly, and demonstrating care.

Joy

At Mosaico, there is joy in learning. We care about helping students find joy in the college application process and not just in the end result. Although the process is intensive, we love teaching and focus on making our classes enjoyable.

Intention

Students are at the center of our work. We help guide their college application process based on their unique intentions and decisions. We collaboratively endeavor to bring students’ intentions through to completion.

Alina Aksiyote

Alina is a co-founder of Mosaico and loves teaching. She coordinates Mosaico’s non-profit programs and workshops and has mentored over sixty students through their college entrance exams, academic subjects and college admissions process. Alina studied Anthropology at Yale University.

During her time in college, Alina designed and taught a food justice summer course for middle schoolers and ran an after school radio production program for high schoolers. After graduating, she was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to teach English at a non-profit school in New Delhi, India.

Since her return to Mexico City, Alina has taught several classes and workshops on social justice issues and gender equity. She loves learning from her students and creating spaces of dialogue. She’s passionate about helping students find joy in learning and agency in their lives.

Alex Vértiz

Alex studied at the EDRON Academy, Lycée Franco Mexicain (Mexico) and UWC Atlantic College (UK). He graduated from Brown University (USA) where he studied International Relations, as well as Portuguese and Brazilian Studies.

Alex coordinated a Diplomatic Course with the Mexican and Chilean Foreign Ministries and worked as an Admissions Counselor for academic programs abroad. His interest in education led him to design courses for youth empowerment, critical engagement, as well as to launch startups and social impact initiatives. Alex is most passionate about creating supportive communities founded on the principles of collaboration.

 

Ana Flores

Ana studied mathematics at the UNAM and currently studies her masters in computer science and engineering at the Institute for Applied Mathematics. She worked as an assistant and professor at UNAM’s Department of Science for seven years. She also worked on the computing systems for the National Electoral Institute (INE), as well as those of a few private companies.

Her interest in education has led her to participate in social literacy projects for the elderly, musical education programs, and holistic education programs for children with autism. At Mosaico, Ana helps students prepare standardized admission tests for Mexican and American universities. She also helps students expand their knowledge and skills on school subjects, through our Academic Support program. Ana also designs and facilitates gender equity workshops with Mosaico at a public middle school.

Liam Greenwell

Liam is an educator and writer with a passion for the outdoors, music, and Liverpool FC. He is passionate about empowering students to take charge over their own learning and sees teaching as a path toward social justice.

Before joining Mosaico, he worked at Old St. Mary’s School in Chicago, Illinois, as a 7th and 8th grade English teacher and has additional experience teaching creative writing, test prep, Latin, and ESL to a range of ages from third grade to adult. He previously graduated Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude from Brown University, where he wrote his honors thesis based on firsthand anthropological research in Manipur, India. His writing about art, technology, and travel has been published in several magazines, and he also enjoys writing fiction in his spare time.

 

Nava Bearson

Nava is passionate about sharing the joy of learning. She studied Cognitive Science and Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley. While at UC Berkeley, she served as a peer advocate for students, helping them deal with conflicts with the university. She also secured funding and designed programs to provide students with emergency grants for rent, food, and medical bills. After graduating, Nava worked for the UC Berkeley Basic Needs Center, providing holistic support to students experiencing food and housing insecurity.  

Nava has immersed herself in studying Spanish for the last two years and enjoys nerding out about the intricacies and quirks of languages. She loves swimming, cooking, trying new foods, reading, writing, and learning how to play the guitar!   

Rachel Rood-Ojalvo

Rachel graduated with honors from Brown University, where she majored in Urban Studies with a focus on criminal justice reform. While in Providence, she worked on a successful grassroots campaign to eliminate barriers to education for folks returning from incarceration.

She is passionate about creating equal access to high quality education, employment, housing, and health care. For over two years, she has helped students prepare for college entrance exams. Rachel strongly believes in supportive, personalized education that encourages students to have fun and feel confident. In her free time, she loves reading fiction, swimming, and drinking coffee with dessert.

 

Sureya Melkonian

Sureya studied Philosophy and Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley, along with pre-medicine courses such as Chemistry, Biology, and Anatomy. After graduating, she worked as a reporter and podcast producer, covering stories at the intersection of sustainability, technology, and renewable energy policy.

Sureya went on to work as a homeschool teacher and tutor for Math and Science subjects in San Francisco, California, and has been teaching standardized test preparation for high school and middle school students in Mexico City since 2018. She loves running, writing fiction, traveling around Mexico, and making short experimental films. She strongly believes that our strengths are found in our differences.

Theo Twidwell

Theo, originally from California, graduated magna cum laude from Macalester College where he double-majored in American Studies and Educational Studies. He went on to teach summer courses on writing to classes of seventh-graders from populations historically excluded from tertiary education. He later developed a local history curriculum for learners within an economically marginalized neighborhood in Managua, Nicaragua. Upon graduation, he worked as a mentor aiding students throughout public schools in St. Paul with their academic and socio-emotional skills.

A first-generation college graduate, Theo has engaged his passion for connecting others with the opportunities afforded by a university education by guiding over 50 students through the college application process in the US, Canada, and Europe. When free, Theo likes to swim, try new foods, and explore Mexico.
